About the Artist

Artist Tetiana Cherevan

Ukrainian artist Tetiana Cherevan presents the project "Women Defenders" in Barcelona.

The famous artist created portraits of women who are defending Ukraine at the front. With her artistic talent, Tetiana Cherevan tried to capture the essence of these brave servicewomen who took up arms to defend their homeland.

On her social media pages, the artist wrote to her readers about the idea of the project. People sent links to the pages of the women defenders they know. Now there are 12 A4 portraits made in pencil and ink.

By presenting her portraits in Barcelona, she hopes to raise awareness of the full-scale war that Russia unleashed in Ukraine over a year ago and to highlight the vital role that women play in defending their country. The artist also hopes to inspire others to support the cause of those fighting for freedom and justice.

"This is my great tribute to women. Today, not after the war. Because that's how I feel. I feel it with my whole being. I believe that Ukrainian women warriors deserve respect and recognition \for their contribution to the future of our country and I feel a deep connection to their struggles and triumphs. In general, my respect for women is not only something I profess, but rather a fundamental part of my identity and worldview, which I have demonstrated in my work throughout my career. I want these portraits to show the world the strength of spirit and unbreakable spirit of Ukrainian defenders. It is vital for each of us to understand the war in all its truth in order to defeat it as a phenomenon," says Tatiana.

The works are created with watercolor pencil, an artistic medium that emphasizes their documentary nature. Cross-stitching with red thread symbolizes the genetic code of Ukraine.

Back at the beginning of the war, in 2014, Tetiana created the project "Berehyni", where she collected 20 portraits of Ukrainian women who are a symbol of family protection. She wrote about the idea to paint the women Berehyni on her Facebook page. People sent photos of women who are Berehynias to them. Alongside prominent Ukrainian poets, artists, and singers were a grandmother, a volunteer, and girls. The Maidan Post selected 4 works from the Berehynia project and printed stamps.

These works were presented in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy. Subsequently, they, along with others created by the artist in Thailand, were presented at a solo exhibition of the project "Ukrainian Women in Art" at the BACC Contemporary Art Center, Bangkok.
